McALLEN - John M. Pater, 90, passed away on Friday, July 27, 2007 at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, Texas.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Julia Pater of fifty-seven years; one son, Patrick Pater of Missouri; one grandson, John of Florida; a daughter-in-law, Sandy (Johnny) Pitchford of Florida; and one foster son, Peter (Brenda) Lamberton of Weslaco.
John M. Pater was born to Benjamin Pater and Carla Nicholson Pater on December 31, 1916 in Lyndhurst, NJ. Mr. Pater was a member of the U.S. Army and served in Korea in 1950-1951, where he distinguished himself with acts of bravery. He was wounded and received a battlefield commission and the Silver Star for heroism and dedication to duty in combat. His other medals include the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, two overseas bars, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal and National Defense Service Medal. After leaving the service, he applied for flying lessons under the G.I. Bill and attained a Commercial Pilots License. He loved flying and taking relatives and friends up for a buzz over their homes. He retired from Bituminous Insurance Company, based in St. Louis, where he had been employed as a heavy equipment insurance adjuster and later as consultant. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veteran and National Rifle Association. Mr. Pater had many interests; he was an accomplished wood carver, an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the great outdoors. He will be remembered for his sense of humor and his quick wit.
Interment of ashes will be held on Wednesday, August 1, 2007, at 11 a.m. at the Rio Grande Valley State Veterans Cemetery in Mission. In memory of his great military accomplishments full military services will be held at graveside. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
