My father and mother - Robert and Emma Treichler - Swiss immigrants - lived in an apartment of a home owned by JOSEPH O'HANLON, NY Fire Chief. My sister Vera and I were both born at Madison Park Hospital in Brooklyn while parents resided there, Vera on 1 25 1933, I on July 31, 1935. THOUGH NOT A TIE TO ANCESTRY, you might like this anecdote. My dad's father and mother - Robert and Bertha Treichler of RICHTERSWIL, Switz., visited sometime in 33-34. Chief O'Hanlon had a FIRE CHIEF car with a fireman as chauffeur and was mindful of how my grandparents were totally amazed at EVERYTHING in NYC, and arranged with my dad to have his parents on a corner someplace way uptown at noon on a mid-week day. O'Hanlon arrived in the chief's car, and with red lights and siren carried the amazed tourists back downtown (I think along Broadway) in an adventure few tourists would ever get.

Dad had also arranged to bring his father up out of the subway on (34th Street???) where the view of the EMPIRE STATE simply gets larger and more imposing/impressive/ unbelievable the further up the stairs one comes. Grandpa came out craning his head and the further back he stepped, the larger the Empire State appeared, and he began step BACKWARDS into the roadway IN TRAFFIC. Dad said a huge Irish cop directing traffic blew his whistle, stopped traffic from ALL FOUR DIRECTIONS and walked over to granpa, wrapped his arm around his shoulder and walked him back to safety.

The ride in the chief's car and 'first view' of the Empire State were among the highpoints, in a story often told at gatherings.

The elder Treichler was a 'Kapitain' of the Lake Zurich Steamboat (think Switzerland's answer to the Staten Island Ferry) He eventually became 'Uber-Kapitain' or Head Captain of ALL the Lake Zurich Ferries, or as we later labeled him, an Admiral in the Swiss Navy.

Dad said he thought O'Hanlon was a big man in Tammany Hall.

I've been resident of Utah / California / Oregon since 1954, and the number below is (near) Portland OR (503) 642 2338 . As stated, no need to reply, but just an insight into what sounds like a fun-loving guy. I HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO KNOWLEDGE of Mr. O'Hanlon personally; our family MOVED TO Bellmore in 36-37, (I was ONE) and to Seaford in 1941. The house we lived in remembered from pictures was very similar to the house shown in the opening credits of the old ARCHIE BUNKER tv show. If it would help, I might be able to dig up the actual address.

Are you looking for pictures / other artifacts of that home. I DO NOT KNOW IF I COULD COME UP with any, but if these would be helpful, send me address / phone contact and IF I COME ACROSS ANYTHING, will inform you
