O'Dwyers in Texas

Classification: Query
Surnames: O'Dwyer, Douglas
My great grandfather was Patrick O'Dwyer. According to my family, Patrick was born in Co. Cork, Ireland in 1842. He came to the U.S. in 1858-60 when he was about 18 years old.
Because of his age and when he came (the Civil War), he was required to join the military. Patrick was mustered into service on 1 Aug 1862 in Wisconsin and served in the Union Army, 27th Artillery, Company D 32, Regiment of Freeman's Wisconsin Infantry Volunteers. He was discharged Aug 21, 1865.

I know nothing about Patrick's parents except that his father's name was James and his mother's, Mary. My father did hear that Patrick had two sisters although he did not remember their names. One of them supposedly moved to Michigan. I know nothing else of this branch of the family.

Patrick moved to Tyler, TX after the war and that's where he met Laura Johnson. They were married in Rusk, TX in a Roman Catholic church on 9 May 1875 (although some family said the year was 1880). One of my great aunts thought they had 13 children, but only 8 lived to adulthood. On one of the military vouchers when Patrick applied for his pension, he listed his living children as being (his spelling):
Leanora O'Dwyer born 16 April 1876
Mary O'Dwyer born 20 Aug 1878
Margrett O'Dwyer born 28 Aug 1882
Rosey O'Dwyer born 19 July 1884
William O'Dwyer 19 Sept 1887
Gertrude O'Dwyer 10 March 1890
Bertha O'Dwyer 28 Jan 1896

Patrick and Laura moved to Dallas, TX, where Patrick worked as a construction contractor. He was the contractor for a number of buildings that I have been told still stand in Dallas including the Sacred Heart Cathedral on Ross Ave. and St. Peter's Cathedral. He died on 29 May 1906 in Dallas.

My grandmother was Margaret Agnes O'Dwyer, daughter of Patrick & Laura. She was born 8 Aug 1882. She met my grandfather, William Lewis Douglas, in El Paso, TX, where they were married and lived a number of years before moving
to San Antonio. She died in 1963.

My great aunt Bertha is still alive the last time I heard (I talked to her daughter at the beginning of this year) and is now 105 years old! She is still mentally alert and living in a nursing home outside of San Antonio, TX. She was the youngest of Patrick's childrens and has little family history to share.

So could there be any family relations reading this or someone who could point me in the right direction? Thanks.

Bob Douglas
