Checking on this Henry Niles, b. abt. 1787, d. 20 Feb. 1847, buried with his wife in the St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic (Coeyemans) Church at Albany, NY. I want to know if he is part of the family of David 7, David 6, Gaius 5, Nathaniel 4, John 3-1 Niles. David 6 had a son named Henry, who married Sarah Waggoner in Moultrie Co. IL in 1884. Sarah was the daughter of my gg grandmother, Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner and John Thomas Waggoner. After John Thomas Waggoner died, Elizabeth Rutherford Waggoner married David 7 Niles, which is undoubtedly how her daughter Sarah met her step-cousin Henry. That’s part of why I’m wondering if the younger Henry is the namesake of the Henry Niles who was buried in Albany.

The other reason is that the earlier Henry Niles was married to a Catherine Schermerhorn, whose name is also on the same gravestone. Her dates, shown on the stone, are b. abt. 1792, d. March 8, 1870. My ggg grandmother was Neeltje Schermerhorn, 1783- after 1821. All the early Schermerhorns were related to each other, though I’m not quite sure where this Catherine Schermerhorn fits into my family tree. But at least I do know that she’s related to me somehow. So the descendants of the Henry Niles on the tombstone are related to me as well.

So that makes me really interested to know if the Henry Niles on the gravestone is descended from one of the Niles in the list above. They go back far enough that Gaius served in the Rev. War, leaving plenty of collateral lines for there to be a Henry who is related, who lived in NY. If so, then if they left descendants, I’m a Niles by blood.

And if that is the case, Sarah Waggoner married not just a step-cousin, but a distant relative as well—if my logic holds. This is part of what makes genealogy so interesting.

Everything I know about this line, except for David 6 on down, comes from Allen Niles, on this message board, and census data he pointed me to.

Thanks,
Doris
