Virginia Meriwether [TMSI #53803]
Richmond Whig (Richmond, Virginia)
January 22, 1858

Died, with gastritis, at the residence of her husband, Judge. J. Meriwether, of Bradley county, Arkansas, on the 28th inst., in the twenty-fifth year of her age, Mrs. Virginia Meriwether, daughter of Benjamin Fuqua Bews, of Cumberland county, Va.; also her infant daughter, in less than five minutes before her.

If the first and most perfect special qualities, fine accomplishments or the love and prayers of friends could have prolonged her life, my dear friend would have still lived. But the power of man proved inadequate, and death has claimed a most noble victim.

Mrs. M, for about one month before her death, had a violent attack of cold, from which she never recovered, and which, no doubt, hastened her death.

The loss to her bereaved husband and only daughter, about two years old, is indeed irreparable.

The memory of her extraordianary virtues will ever be dear to those who knew her best; but, oh! they also plant deep in the heart that sad grief which will live as long a life and memory shall last with those nearest and dearest to her. But the dear and loved friend has gone from a sphere where "death rides upon every breeze, and lurks in every flower," to the "spirit land," not without the consoling hope of a power and everlasting reunion at the great resurrection.

A. S. C. Mc.
Mt. Elba, Bradley Co., Ark., Dec. 30, 1857
