Death of Dr. C.J.F. Meriwether

Died at his residence, Swan Lake, Miss., on September 27, 1890, Dr. C.J.F. Meriwether, in the fifty-nineth year of his age.

Dr. Meriwether was an accomplished physician and skillful surgeon, with a mind strong and vigorous and studious habits, his general fund of information was extensive. He was a gallant Confederate soldier, fearless and brave. His hospitality was boundless – to his friends he was loving and true and to his enemies magnanimous and frank. His nature was of that sterling cast which rendered him bold and aggressive – always defending the rights and spurning the wrong, regardless of personal consequences. He was a kind and loving husband and father, a friend faithful and true. He was firm in his religious convictions and a member of the Presbyterian Church. The writer has known him for many years, both in war and peace, and loved him as a brother. He was warm-hearted and impulsive and sometimes hasty, but ever ready to retract a wrong; was faithful in all the responsibilities and duties of life. The death of such a man it truly a sad calamity. The ways of Providence are indeed mysterious. May the Lord protect and comfort his bereaved family and friends.
