Also, on a personal side as my father passed away on 6 January 2012 of Parkinson's disease that made him an invalid for the last couple years I can certainly empathise but can only imagine 11 years of caring for someone. Don't know what made George Clinton an invalid but might have been his Civil War service since Mary had a claim from 1890 on to the Civil War pension.
My dad use to tell me a story that I will share that was told to him. He told it to me and then could not get any confirmation from anyone on the melius side as they said no Melius on our side was ever in a the civil war. So we started to thinking he may have been in a milita that was formed when the confederates came up to gettyburgh.
However this story could very well fit into George Clinton's 2 year Civil War service or in a milita he was in at Gettysburg prior to him signing up for regular service. The story goes that a bunch of them were retreating from confederates at night. They stopped at a point thinking they were far enough ahead of them. A Melius and another told them they were not stopping and kept going. During the night the one's that stayed were all killed by the confederates and a memorial was set up for them that my dad was taken to when he was little.
