On my many travels looking for my ancestor Owen McGann ( b. 183? d. 1880) both in the UK where I live and in America (he travelled back and forth between the two countries), I have previously come across the cluster of McGann's in Cockermouth in the British records, but didn't bother to investigate further as I had no firm evidence linking my familty to there. Maybe it's time I looked again.
The name Eugene and Owen repeat often in my family names - as it was the custom to name first sons after fathers, or close family relatives. What intrigues me about your post is that Owen was also a Coal Trimmer - a common occupation in my family of McGanns, who lived down the coast in Liverpool about sixty miles away.
Relative or not, Cumberland happens to be a beautiful region of England - commonly known as the Lake District. A nice place to have ancestors!
Maybe there is a connection through Owen to your branch. Contact me if you are interested in finding out more.
