Surnames: MAR, MARR, MARE
I am at the infamous "dead-end" on a family line. This particular line carries the MAR/MARR surname. On one death certificate there is even a MARE spelling.

Unfortunately for me, the immigrant's name is "John Mar." I have no birth date for him (other than can assume around 1812 as per the ship manifest), believe his death to be between 1833 (birth of his oldest child) and 1840 (second marriage for his wife who is listed as a widow of "Jno Mar."). I did find a John Mar on a ship from the UK to America in 1828. Unfortunately, the manifest groups the entire group aboard as being from "Brittan/Ireland"). On this ship, this "John Mar" "smuggled himself onboard." The ship departed from Liverpool, England and landed in Philadelphia.

I have searched all other avenues to learn more about this man but nothing is coming up. I am requesting a formal marriage certificate document but am not holding my breath that anything great will be listed as I have similar documents from Louisville during this time period.

Anyway, with both JOHN and MAR and MARR to be so very, very common, I am at a loss. Has anyone came across a John Mar who emigrated from Scotland during this time?
