Hi, Dermott and everyone,
My Lydon relatives originated in Cloonturk, Mayo, which is right outside of the town of Kilkelly. Most of my Lydon relatives moved to Pennsylvania, USA.
Are you aware that the maiden name of the mother of Gene Tunney, the 1926-28 heavyweight boxing champion, was Lydon? She was originally from Mayo, Ireland - near Kiltimagh.
There is information about her and her parents and siblings at the following website address:http://www.genetunney.org/birth.html
She moved to New York City, and her son, Gene Tunney, the heavyweight champion, moved to Connecticut and also traveled around the world. Her grandson, John V. Tunney, became a Congressman from California in the 1960s and then the U.S. Senator from California in the 1970s.
There is also a book called: "To Hell or Hobart" about Irish unfortunates who were transported to Australia during the 1800s because they were members of anti-British organizations or because they were caught stealing a sheep during the Irish Holocaust/Hunger in order to feed their families. One of the main characters was Ellen Lydon. I would highly recommend the book if you ever get a chance to read it. It's probably available from the used book sites at: http://www.bookfinder.com/
