John Lumsden of Franklin County first appeared in the Prince William County records about 1747 and I think he may have come to Virginia because of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745. The Lumsden Y-DNA Project has been very helpful in possibly tracking down his origins but it does show us that our Group 2 is not genetically related to the main Lumsden line in Scotland that George Lumsden undoubtedly belonged to. Through cousins in Canada [we match], they have anecdotal evidence that their ancestors were from Aberdeenshire, went to Ireland after the rebellion, then on to Canada a few generations later, so that is good evidence that John Lumsden of Franklin Co. also came from there. Of course, John F. Lumsden [who got the DNA project going] doesn't match our Group 2, and he does matche with the historical Lumsdens in Aberdeenshire. I believe my John Lumsden belonged to a closely associated family and somehow back in time our Y-DNA [which changes very little over many generations] somehow came from a father who was not actually "a Lumsden." The DNA evidence is very revealing but unfortunately cannot identify who that unknown father might be. If you want to see the results of the DNA study go to:
