My grandmother was Caroline (Carrie) E. Leffler Hodge. I wish I had seen your post earlier, as I have been researching the family for a couple of years. I am still trying to unravel her past, as she was taken in and raised by a neighbor (Henry and Margaret Haines) of Zanesville when she was just a little girl after her mother died. Evidently the Margaret Haines wanted a girl, as she had 3 boys. One person said her mother died when Wilbur was born, so she would have been 2 years old at that time, but others state sometime between 1881 and 1886 she was adopted. and list her name as Cora and date of birth as Nov. 7, 1878, but as far as I know she always went by Caroline or "Carrie". Also, in her own birthday book, which I have, she has her date of birth as Nov. 7, 1879, so I'm not sure if the Ohio records are correct, or if she was incorrect. To further complicate matters, she is buried in Tanner Cemetery, N. Belsay Road, Flint, Michigan. My parents made a mistake on her gravestone, and list her date of birth as 1889, which is totally wrong. She died at age 82, and the birth date of 1889 would have made death age as 72. Carrie cared for the Haines in their old age, but was never legally adopted. She also cared for 2 elderly aunts that lived with them and helped raise the Haines' granddaughter (John Haines daughter Francis) after John and his wife died. Because of having to care for her family, her own life was postponed until after 1911, when Henry Haines died. She married William Ray Hodge (known as Ray) on 12 Jun 1912 in Franklin County, Ohio, and then moved to Genesee, Genesee, Michigan. My mother, Dorothy Hodge, was born 20 Mar 1914, and her brother Donald Hodge was born 10 Jan 1916. After her husband died and my mom Dorothy had married Fred Kitchen, they moved to Grand Blanc, Michigan and took grandma Carrie with them. Dorothy & Fred had 4 children, and I am the third-born. I was very close to my grandma, who we all called "Nonnie". She helped to raise me, and I loved her dearly. She was very religious, but suffered from dementia and arthritis in her later years, and completely lost her hearing. The hearing loss is a trait our whole family has suffered from. Carrie Hodge died on 3 May, 1962 at home. At age 82, we believed she suffered a stroke, slipped into a coma, and then died in her bed at our home a few days later. People did not go to hospitals back then, as dying was a natural process. I really hope you get this message, and I would be interested in knowing how you are related to the Leffler family. I just finished researching the Haines family, but will not include them in my family tree, as they are not blood descendants. My tree is listed as Diane Kitchen Daniel family tree.
