George and William Layton (Leighton)

I am trying to find George Layton's father. Most on Ancestry have William as his father, but the dates aren't lining up at all. William is showing that he was born in 1706. If that is correct, I find it hard to believe that he is the father of George born 1716, not 1720 as most have on here. Why?

Because, I found a marriage record that clearly states that George was 24 when he married Mary Burrace on 22 June 1740. That would make George born in 1716, England. He and Mary come to America in 1743, well documented. They settle in VA.

Now here is where is gets all squirrely, William Layton marries Ann Smith on 17 Jan 1747. Again, William is born in 1706 and Ann is born in 1708, both in England. So if William and Ann are George's parents that would make them only 10 and 8 years old respectively when they had George!

I think something else is going on here. It might be that William and George are brothers NOT father and son.

I found one mention on a baptismal that George Leighton was the son of George Leighton and Mary. But I haven't found any records that state George and Mary had a son named George. Unless, George Leighton married to Mary Burrace is the son of a senior George Leighton and another Mary? No records to support this theory.

Here is my lineage;

George Layton* (1716 - )
5th great-grandfather

Capt. Robert G Layton* (1746 - 1838)
son of George Layton*

John Slaughter Layton* (1784 - 1856)
son of Capt. Robert G Layton*

John Mitchell (Metcalf?) Layton* (1819 - 1891)
son of John Slaughter Layton*

Sophia Grant Layton* (1863 - 1936)
daughter of John Mitchell (Metcalf?) Layton*

Thanks for any help on finding George's real father, it would be greatly appreciated.
