Hi Cliff, I would like to add that we are looking for a William Layton who lived in Kershaw County, South Carolina during the mid 1700's and fathered William Layton (b 1800 in that same county). I found a land grant for 100 acres for Will on the Santee River (1765). Also grants for John Layton on Lynche Creek (1775), and Francis on the Wateree Creek and Taylor Creek of the Wateree River (1765, 1771 & 1773). These are most probably relations and the grants may have carried through from earlier times. This family will be separate from the Stephen Layton's found in Spartenburg during that same timeframe though they may be related.
