Another von Koven theory

I am Gary Koven, born in New York City in 1953. My biological family includes only Kovens. My extended family includes Kovens and deKovens.

My father, Mark Seymour Koven, was born in Boston in 1923. My father relates that his parents became family friends with Henry deKoven, who was an actor in Boston. Henry deKoven, now deceased, later extended his career to New York City where his daughter Gloria deKoven Diabo (born approximately 1948) worked for the Rivoli Theater for many years.

My father theorizes that Henry may have been a descendant of the Hessian von Kovens in the time of the Revolutionary War who returned to Moldavia and eventually came to Canada.

According to research materials my father found in the University of Wisconsin Library in the 1960's, Baron von Koven was the commandant of a small privateer vessel that was headed for the Trenton/Monmouth, New Jersey conflict in 1776. However, unlike the doctrinaire accounts of the capture of the sleeping Hessians who had already landed, in this account the Baron's boat was waylaid by American privateers while in a dense fog. With a gun to his head, the Baron was offered two choices: abandon his vessel and his men to the Americans, and accept exile to a large estate in Virginia abandoned by a wealthy British Loyalist family which had recently returned to England, or be shot on the spot.

The Baron surrendered, accepted exile, and took up residence for a generation in Virginia. His children, however, sold the estate and returned to Moldavia in the mid-1800's. Eventually they migrated to the part of Canada previously documented in other messages in this forum by Linda and Dave.

This would seem to be borne out by an Internet reference:
