PLEASANT VALLEY, Iowa -- Catherine Marie Kouba, 92, formerly of Iowa City, died Friday, Oct. 7, 2005, at Riverview Manor, Pleasant Valley, Iowa, after a brief illness.

The Rev. Michael Phillips officiated the services. Burial was at St. Joseph's Cemetery. After the burial, a brunch was held.

Mrs. Kouba was born Nov. 27, 1912, in Iowa City, the daughter of Frank and Barbara Neuzil Machovec. She married Clarence Kouba on Aug. 7, 1934, at St. Wenceslaus Church, Iowa City. He preceded her in death in 1985.

She was a graduate of City High School and the Irish Business College.

She and her husband farmed in Scott Township, east of Iowa City, for many years. She was a resident of Atrium Village, Hills, from 1992 to 2001.

She was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church, the Altar and Rosary Society, the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, the National Catholic Society of Foresters and a charter member of Sew'n Blow Club. She had co-authored several books and was an avid gardener. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, crocheting and playing cards.

Survivors include a daughter, Mary Jo Godwin and husband Dr. Robert of Pleasant Valley; seven grandchildren, Tom Kouba, Becky Schmidt and husband Randy, Ed Kouba and wife Jill, Ted Godwin and wife Shelley, Beth Calabotta and husband Dr. David, Cathy Stensby and husband Tim and Maggie Godwin; nine great-grandchildren; and a daughter-in-law, Patricia Harney and husband Bill of Oxford.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sons, Raymond and Robert; four brothers; and six sisters.
