YOUNGSTOWN, OH – Helen Svoboda, 89, of the city’s west side, passed away peacefully early Wednesday morning, March 14, 2012, at Caprice Health Care Center in North Lima, Ohio where she had been a patient for one week.

Helen was born July 24, 1922, in Prague, Czechoslovakia, a daughter of the late Vaclav and Helena Kaspar.

Helen was raised in Prague during the art deco period, and was very proud of her Bohemian heritage.
She lived through the German occupation and communist occupation of Prague, and fled Czechoslovakia for the United States after World War II to reunite with “her” American soldier, Nick Brandsovich, whom she later married in Youngstown, Ohio.

In her younger days, Helen enjoyed snow skiing in Austria, and summers at the beach in Romania, where she was an avid swimmer. More recently, Helen enjoyed reading, and attended the Boardman YMCA, where she was a member of the Silver Slippers.

Helen was a member of the Bethel Assembly of God, and worked for a time for Squaw Creek Country Club.

Helen leaves her son-in-law and his wife, Joseph T. and Mary Sinowski of North Lima.

Her daughter, Helena M. Sinowski, her son, Richard M. Brandsovich, and her husbands, Nick Brandsovich and Charles Svoboda, are deceased.

Family and friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 17, 2012 at Kinnick Funeral Home, 477 N. Meridian Road, Youngstown, Ohio where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m.

Interment will follow at Green Haven Memorial Gardens.
