Edwina Kanis who died in 1962 was Mary Edwina Taubman Kanis. She was my grandmother and was married to Ferdinand's son, Edward Kanis.
I read your posts to my aunt and she also is confused about who this Emma is. I thought Emma was my great-aunt Emma, but it turns out that isn't who she is. Also, the Wilhelmina Thoma who married Ferdinand--this would be my great-grandmother and mother of Edward Kanis who was married to Mary Edwina Kanis--is most likely a cousin of the Willmans, according to my aunt. I think she is the mysterious Mina since Mina was a shortened version of Wilhelmina, a common name back then.
My aunt told me that Ferdinand and Wilhelmina actually were married in Germany, then they both immigrated to the U.S. independently of each other. Wilhelmina came as an indentured servant to a Lutheran minister living in Michigan somewhere. She worked off the indenture with the minister's family over five years, then went to Pittsburgh to stay with the Willmans until she could join her husband, Ferdinand, who had since homesteaded in Arkansas. (I hope I have this story correct--my aunt will correct details that I'm confusing.)
Since I was reading the posts to my aunt over the phone, I don't think I could get the names across, etc., well enough for her to piece it all together, especially since we're talking about people and events from 40 to 50 years ago! I recognized most of the names you pulled from your aunt's address book, and the few that I didn't know, my aunt recognized as friends of the family. She has a lot of names and dates stored somewhere and said she would dig these papers out. Then she'll visit my brother there in Little Rock where she can read your posts and reply.
She told me that she remembered Rosetta very well--she was told to address her as Cousin Rosetta--and that Rosetta was vivacious and very beautiful. They all adored her, she told me.
My aunt has lots of good stories that I hope she'll be able to share with you.
Take care and we'll see how this story unfolds!
