Carl August Jutz was born in Windschlaeg, Baden, Germany.
He is the 4th child & 2nd son of the 9 children of Joseph & Ottilia Zettwoch Jutz. Carl was born about 8:00 am, 9-22-1838, Windschlaeg, Baden, Germany, and was baptized at 2:00 pm the next day, 9-23-1838, by Rev. Philipp Scherer at St. Pankratius Catholic Church, Windschlaeg, Germany.
Carl did not immigrate to the USA with the rest of his family. He stayed in Germany and, although only 15 years old, returned to Beuern and worked with the Dutch painter, August Knipp. He worked with him for several years, but his teacher died in 1859. Carl went to Munich on his friends' advice. He earned the money for his trip by painting portraits, and on 4-11-1861, the Munich Police gave him permission for his further training. He received his education in Munich studying nature. In January, 1867, he left for Dusseldorf. This began his most successful and productive time. He began exhibiting in 1865, and regularily made the Dresden & Munich art exhibitions; between 1870 and 1890, frequently the Berlin Academy exhibition and the Munich Glass Palace; and in 1893, the Great Art Exhibition in Berlin. Outside of Germany, his paintings were shown in 1867, at the Paris World Exhibition; and also in 1873, at the Vienna World Exhibition. His paintings were also exhibited in Australia in 1879 and 1881. Baden Grand Duke Frederick was more than once personally pleased with Carl. In 1892, he was presented with the Knight's Cross 1st Class of the Order of the Tearful Lion. In his later years, in Pfaffendorf, near Koblanz, he was still productive, and made most of his smallest pictures with the aid of a magnifying glass. His paintings hang in art galleries around the world, especially in Germany and the U.S. Carl Jutz did not have an academy to attend. He was a self made artist. His paintings, often with humor, gave his animals a special charm. Carl is the only well known German animal painter. His son, referred to as Carl Jutz, the Junior or the younger, also became a well known artist.
