JOHN JOUETT b Va. 1720, d Va. 1802, m Mourning Harris (qv). In 1773 he bought 100 acres from John Moore. In 1776 he bought another 100 acres from John Moore. During the American Revolution he warned Thomas Jefferson and the Virginia legislature of the arrival of Gen. Tarleton and the British army, enabling them to escape. The Kentucky Jouetts claim this feat for his son, Jack, but the older tradition is that John Jouett, Sr. made the warning ride. He was the owner operator of Swan Tavern. In 1790 he laid out High Street, in Charlottesville, Virginia with a row of lots on each side. This writer drove down High Street in 1980 and in 2001 while passing through Charlottesville. His wife Mourning Harris was descended from early settrler Capt. Thomas Harris as well as Col. William Claiborne and his wife Elizabeth Boteler. All three have Magna Charta and Royal ancvestry.
