EDWARD LEE (LEE H.) HUGHES, born April 1, 1865, Catoosa County, Georgia; died October 12, 1913, Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee (see "Notes"). Son of HUDSON (HUTSON) B. HUGHES (born October 1830 in Georgia and died between 1900-1910 in James County, Tennessee) and AMANDA E. UNKNOWN (born about 1840 in Tennessee and died before 1900). He married SCOTCHADONA ELIZABETH RIDDLE about 1897 in James County, Tennessee, daughter of WILLIAM RIDDLE and AMANDA McGHEE. She was born March 29, 1874 in James County, Tennessee, and died July 16, 1957 in Chattanooga, Hamilton County, Tennessee.

In the 1870 Catoosa County, Georgia census, Lee Hughes was 5 years old. His name as recorded on the census was "EDWARD LEE HUGHES". In the 1880 Catoosa County census, Lee Hughes was 15 years old. His name as recorded on the census was "LEE H. HUES". In the 1900, James County census, Lee Hughes was 35. His name as recorded on the census was "HUDSON LEE HUGHES". In the 1910 James County census, Lee Hughes was 45. His name as recorded on the census was "LEE H. HUGHES". Lee Hughes is buried next to his wife in Plowman's Cemetery in Apison, Tennessee. On his tombstone is recorded the name "WILLIAM LEE HUGHES". Throughout his life, all facts about him remain the same, except for the name changes.
Another unknown fact was that he had been previously married before he married Scotchadona Riddle in 1897. He had a son named GEORGE HUGHES by his first wife. George was born in James County, Tennessee in July 1888. He was living with his father and new family as recorded in the 1900 census. By the time of the 1910 census, he was gone.
This is the obituary that appeared in the Chattanooga Times for LEE HUGHES, October 13, 1913, on Page 3:
"FATHER AND CHILD TO BE BURIED TOGETHER. Daughter's Funeral Postponed When Lee Hughes Dies.
Just as the body of his daughter was being sent from Chattanooga to Apison, Tennessee for interment, Lee Hughes, aged 50, breathed his last at his home, 219 Miller Avenue, yesterday. Miss Alta Hughes, aged 16, died Saturday after a short illness of typhoid fever. Her father died yesterday morning of appendicitis after an illness of several weeks. Because of the death of the father, the funeral of Miss Hughes will be postponed until his body can be sent to Apison. Father and daughter will be interred together."
This is the obituary that appeared in the Chattanooga Times for ELIZABETH RIDDLE HUGHES, July 18, 1957, on Page 13:
"HUGHES - Mrs. Elizabeth, died early Tuesday night at her residence, 1705 E. Main Street. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. C. E. Steakley, Chattanooga, and Mrs. Wirt Cordell, Mobile, Alabama; one son, Lester Hughes, Atlanta, and four brothers, Fred Riddle, Sam Riddle, and Oscar Riddle, all of Apison, Tennessee, and Charlie Riddle of Bunnell, Florida. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 this afternoon from the Chapel of the Cosmopolitan Funeral Home with the Reverend L. R. Whiddon officiating. Pall bearers will be Austin Riddle, John James, Jon Evans, Jack Cordell, Joe Adams, and John Alonso. Interment will be in Plowman's Cemetery, Apison. The body is at the funeral home. Arrangements by Cosmopolitan Funeral Home."
