I'm researching the above Max Honig who can be found living in Baltimore,MD in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. He and his first wife Mary Jane were both born in Germany per census records. They were apparently living in the West Indies in 1880 and 1881 when their two oldest daughters were born, and then were in London, England when their oldest son Leopold Max was born in 1883. By 1884, they were in Baltimore where their youngest daughter Nellie was born. Mary Jane died later that year, and at some point before 1891, Max married second wife Minnie and went on to have another 6 children with her. Max was a liquor salesman with Gottschalk Co., a distillery, in Maryland.

If anyone else descends from these Honigs or has information on the family, I'd love to hear from you. I'm researching the family for a related friend who has always wondered why one of Max's grandsons was dark complected. I'm wondering if maybe Mary Jane wasn't actually West Indian by ancestry and that's where the darker skin came from. Her name certainly isn't Germanic, although it may have been changed at some point.

I'm also wondering why Max's son Leopold Max Honig suddenly changed his name to "Joseph." He used his real name when registering for the WWI Draft in 1918, and by 1920 was using Joseph which was also the named used in 1930. That really threw me for a loop for awhile.
