My maternal grandfather was Benjamin Louis Hexter of Bangor, Maine(l873 to 1902) He died in December of l902 a few months before my mother, Mary Regina Hexter Cratty, was born in l903 in Bangor, Maine. He also had a son Louis Hexter from a former marriage. He married my grandmother, Mary Josephine Sullivan, in l899. Of course, I never knew my grandfather, but I did hear that the Hexters of Maine were descended from Hessian mercenaries who deserted in New York during the Revolutionary War and some were known as the Hexters of Hessian Heights, New York. When I was growing up in Bangor Maine (l930's 40's)there were no living Hexters or other relatives from that family livinf in Bangor. I was told that Louis Hexter, Benjamin's first born, had delicate lungs and had gone to Arizona or somewhere in the southwest to live with relatives. This son Louis would have been born circa l895. Benjamin also had two aunts known as the Murch sisters. I don't believe they had any issue and I don't know their relationship to the Hexter family but assume they were his mother's sisters and believe I was told they had married two brothers. One aunt was named Jean or Jeanne I was told that Benjamin's father, Moses or his grandfather had come to Maine driving a herd of cattle from New York State. I have no idea when, but probably in the early l800's. Benjamin is buried in the Sullivan Family plot in Mt. Plesaant, the Catholic Cemetery, in Banor, Maine. This is all the information I have on my Hexter ancestry, but hope it may to helpful to you. If anything connects with information you have I would like to hear from you.
