I've been bothered by the fact that so many Greer websites and books list James Greer of Maryland as a son of Sir James Greer of Scotland and a long noble ancestry without any documentation linking these specific James Greers, citing secondary sources such as LDS records. However, the Greer YDNA results look encouraging, at least for establishing whether the James Greer family of Maryland was Scottish. What is it about the YDNA results that makes these Greers special as I read in these postings?

The most comprehensive Greer genealogy site I have come across is one by Ralph and Judia Terry on Rootsweb.

I am curious as to which Greer was the namesake of Greer, SC. According to one of these postings, it was a descendant of Joseph Greer, yet none of the ones shown in Mr. and Mrs. Terry's site are listed as living in Greenville or Spartanburg Counties in South Carolina which is where Greer is located.

I descend from Mary Greer who married John Divers in 1766 in Baltimore/Harford Co., MD and subsequently settled in Franklin Co., VA, who is generally listed as Mary Rebecca Greer daughter of William Greer and Ann Fitch but I believe she was a daughter of Moses Greer and Mary Bayley instead and therefore a great-granddaughter of James Greer and Ann Taylor.
