1. GEORGE1 LESCALLEET was born December 16, 1792 in Maryland, and died April 03, 1858 in Ohio. He married CORDELIA GOSNELL December 05, 1818 in Frederick County, Maryland. She was born September 02, 1798 in Frederick County, Maryland, and died April 04, 1891 in Hanover twp., Licking County, Ohio.

Notes for GEORGE LESCALLEET:
Why did George leave Maryland?

I have done some research into a few of the historical events that might have prompted George and Cordelia Lescalleet to leave their home in Maryland to pursue a life westward in the Ohio Valley. These historical events are simply conjecture on my part, and is not, by any means, meant to imply one certain event is the actual reason why they moved.

1. Construction of the Cumberland Road

The National Pike, or Cumberland Road which is known today as U.S. 40, was the first road to be built with federally owned funds in the United States. Thomas Jefferson selected it by the old Portage path across the Allegheny Mountains at Cumberland, Maryland. The National Pike moved through Pennsylvania, Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois for 677 miles ending at the Mississippi River. Construction began in 1820 and reached Licking County, Ohio somewhere between 1825 and 1835. Completed in 1840, heavily laden Conestoga freight wagons passed continually by fast stage coaches drawn by six horses.

Today, Interstate 70 runs in conjunction with, or parrallel to, U.S. 40, and appears to be the chosen corridor for the Lescalleet's. Throughout the states Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Kansas, in which this route passes, you will find a family of Lescalleet's living within a close aproximation to this major freeway.

2. Revolutionary War Veteran

The majority of Licking County was part of the Military Lands. This was land awarded to men who fought in the Revolutionary War but were never paid all of their salary. The Congress and States did not have the money at the time to pay them. Instead of paying them in money, in 1794 a law was passed that paid the soldiers in land in Ohio. This paid the outstanding debt and helped settle the wilderness of the Ohio Valley.

3. Participant in the War of 1812.
