Jefferson Davis ("JD") Helton was my gr grandfather (son Loyd was my grandfather). I've been looking for info on Sippie for some time but she is elusive. From what I found she and James got married in Pope Co. Illinois in 1855 (James had fathered a child with Rhoda Goins who was born in Marion Co. TN shortly after he married Sippie). My mother says JD was very closed-mouthed about his family, they think because they would've faced discrimination if their tri-racial background was known. My mom remembers there being night riders who'd persecute people who didn't "fit in" and says only whites could go to the local school. JD always said "be good to the Indians" and someone had gone through the family bible and in the story about Pharaoh expelling the Israelites they crossed out Pharaoh and wrote Andrew Jackson (who caused the Cherokee Trail of Tears) and also crossed out Israelites and wrote in Cherokees. There was obviously some resentment there! This is a digression from your question but to me it might explain why so little was passed along. Since the Heltons and the Goins had such a habit of inter-marrying, I'd bet that Sippie and the wife of James' brother George Washington, Eliza Goins, were related but I can't find much on her either. I'm not sure if all this is helpful but I thought I'd share my thoughts. Good luck!
