John Baptist Ginat - Ohio & (West) Virginia Early 1800s

I just started this message board.

One of my gggg grandfathers was John Baptist Ginat of Gallia and Scioto counties in Ohio and Kanawha County in old Virginia (Now western W VA). He was a Frenchman who obtained one of the original grants in the "French Settlement" along the Scioto River. He married Barbara (Barbary) Smith, daughter of his neighbor, Godfrey Smith. That marriage produced 5 children, two of whom were his daughters Emily and Cynthia. I don't know the names of the other three.

According to A Standard History of the Hanging Rock Iron Region of Ohio (text available here on, after Barbara died, John sent his daughters to Cincinnati to be educated, and his daughters returned to the French Grant as teachers. Both Emily and Cynthia were married in Greenup County KY (across the Ohio River from Scioto County OH), where their grandfather, Godfrey Smith, eventually settled. Marriage records listed Godfrey as Emily's grandfather.

Both Cynthia and Emily migrated with their husbands to Vandenburgh County IN where they lived out their lives. In the census of 1880, the record for Cynthia (my ggg grandmother) indicated that her father was born in France and that her mother was born in Germany. However, family stories indicate that Cynthia was part Indian, and she certainly appears to be more Indian-looking than European-looking in the one photo I have of her, taken when she was in her 80s. If she was part Indian, one of her parents must have been born in North America.

The Ginat surname is highly uncommon. I have found only a handful of occurances of that name with that spelling in the US censuses up until 1930, and I've found a few instances of that name in Canada. Some of the Ginat's in this country seem to be of French descent, but others seem to be of Russian Jewish descent.

I'm trying to compile a timeline of family history of people with the Ginat surname, so if you are a Ginat or have ancestors who were Ginats, please post your data here.
