Glad to give any information I have.
In an earlier message a gave the wrong name for the mother of Humphrey Gilbert and Walter Raleigh. I had it backwards, that will teach me to try to remember without reference. Her name was Katharine Champernowne she was from Modbury, Devon. She first married Otho Gilbert, they had 4 children, John, Humphrey, Adrian and Elizabeth. Otho died in 1547. She later married Walter Raleigh, of Fardell, Devon and they had 2 sons, Walter and Carew.

John, and Humphrey Gilbert were knighted and later Walter and Carew were also knighted by Queen Elizabeth.

The Gilbert brothers and their cousins played a part in defending England from the Spanish. They each commanded a ship off the southern coast of England, John commanded the Gabriell; Adrian the Elizabeth, and their cousin Gawen Champernowne the Phoenix.

Sir John married Elizabeth Chudleigh of Ashton and died childless in 1596. He and his wife have effigies on their tomb in Exeter Chathedral.

Humphrey was educated at Eton and Oxford and was in the household of the Princess Elizabeth before she was crowned queen.

He started out to find a passage to the East on Charter given by Queen Elizabeth. He left in 1583 with 5 ships. One of the ships was commanded by Walter Raleigh, but had to turn back due to some sort of disease on board. Humphrey and crew landed at Newfoundland in August and took possession. On his return trip one ship was sent home with sick men and Gilbert sailed on "The Squirrel" the smallest ship. On the return another ship was wrecked with all Gilbert's papers aboard. Further on the return trip, near the Azores, The Squirrel was also lost with Humphrey Gilbert aboard. One of the remaining ships returned to England with news of the fate of the lost ships to John Gilbert (this was in 1583?).

Humphrey had married Anne Aucher in 1570. Apparently they had 2 sons, John Gilbert II and Raleigh Gilbert.

Raleigh Gilbert and his wife Elizabeth Kelly of Spreyton, Devon had 4 children, Ager, Humphrey, John,, and Pomeroy. The line goes on from there through Pomeroy Gilbert and Mary Williams to the present Goeffrey Gilbert. It would take quite a bit to lay out the entire line to the present. It is concerned with the line of the present Gilbert family and there is not any great detail of any of the other lines, which has made it harder to find my husband's family connection to the Gilbert family. Various other branches are listed but without detail.

Queen Elizabeth gave Adrian Gilbert a new commission to explore the Americas after Humphreys' death. His partners included Fracis Drake (also a cousin), Walter Raleigh, Carew Raleigh, Gawen Champernowne, Philip Sidney, and several others.

In 1584 Elizabeth renewed Humphrey Gilbert's Charter in the name of his half-brother Sir Walter Raleigh. The company founded Fort Raleigh on Roanoke Island in the territory of Virginia. This colony, of course, did not survive.

You might want to request a copy of the booklet from the National Trust, PO Box 39, Bromley, Kent BRI 3XL.
