CONESVILLE, Iowa -- John Tucker Gartzke, 78, Conesville, died Monday, Nov. 25, 2002, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine.
Memorial services at the United Church of Christ, Conesville. The Rev. Richard Crooks will officiate. Honorary pallbearers are his grandchildren. A private family burial will be held at a later date at the Conesville Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Mr. Gartzke was born on Nov. 2, 1924, in Iowa City, the son of Herbert Gustav and Margaret Rose Tucker Gartzke. He married Helen Gayle Everett in June 1948 in Conesville. He later married Catherine McDavitt in December 1964 in Iowa City.
He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II.
He was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital as a painter and maintenance technician, retiring in 1985. He was employed by the City of Conesville in law enforcement before retirement. Upon retirement he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and working on his hobbies at home.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine; two sons, Herbert John Gartzke and his wife, Kay, of Conesville and Colton Leon Gartzke and his wife, Karen, of Florence, S.C.; three daughters, Rebecca Jane Holladay of Wilton, Julie Maureen Stanford and Hannah Erin Gartzke, both of Conesville; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Robert Gartzke and his wife, Pauline, of Iowa City; and a sister, Virginia Voparil and her husband, Louis, of Iowa City.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Helen.
