I have been researching the Garringer family for about 12 years. I have the original family member as

Has Gering born about 1550 in Germany

Next generation: Has Georg Gering born 1582 died 1621
Next generation: Georg Peter Geringer born 1628
Next generation: George Diether Geringer born about 1650

The name was originally spelled "Geringer" which means small, or little. It is now the German word for small computers. Two brothers immigrated from the Rhineland in the 1700's with the Palatine Germans that settled Germantown, PA. One remained in Pennsylvania and even served in the militia during the French and Indian Wars. His son was an officer in the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War. The younger brother, David Geringer went to Fredrick, Maryland, then to what is now West Virginia and to Ohio. David's line changed the spelling to Garinger, Garringer, Kerringer. The Pennsylvania branch kept the Geringer. Also, the far western branch came from Russia as part of the Volga Deutch migration in the 1870s. So, there must be a line from that group that immigrated to Russia from central Germany as well.
