Russ,
I have been researching, not always successfully, the
Gangloff name for over 40 years. The name, as you pointed
out, was spelled a lot of ways.
Much of this is due to who was doing the spelling.
Census takers spelled the way they hears. This gives
my mother's(the Gangloff side) family spelling in the
census such as Gaungbauff in the 1860 Ohio Miami County
Census; Federal.
I have found in dealing with other family names that
the Family themselves deliberately changed the spelling
of their name. This distinguished them from relatives or
other directly non-related families that may have been in
the area and with whom they did not wish to be confused.
In other cases it was because of where they came from:
EXAMPLE: McCandless/McCandles/McCandliss etc is from Northern Ireland
BUT
McCandlish is from SCOTLAND !!!
In order to continue, if you so desire, you need to
find out and tell me WHERE the family came from. Gangloff
is a GERMAN CITY, but most of the people who have that name
are from Alsace, France, not germany. Religion has nothing
to do with it, normally, as the Gangloff's may be either
protestant or Roman Catholic.
