LETTS, Iowa - Charles Gaeta Sr., 84, of Letts, died Monday, August 26, 2002, on his farm.

Funeral Mass at St. Mary Church. The Rev. John P. Gallagher will officiate. Pallbearers will be Anthony Gaeta, Nicholas Gaeta, Phillip Gaeta Jr., Vince Gaeta Jr., John Gaeta, and John Pahl. Honorary Bearers will be the Knights of Columbus. Entombment will be in the Gaeta Mausoleum at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, with Military Rites provided by the combined squads of the American Legion Post 27 and the V.F.W. Post 1565. A luncheon will follow the committal service at the Knights of Columbus.

Visitation at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home with a Rosary Prayer Service by the Knights of Columbus at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Gaeta was born on April 14, 1918, in Muscatine, the son of Louis and Filippa Cirivello Gaeta. He married Elizabeth M. Hinrichs on April 19, 1943, at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

He was a US Army veteran serving in World War II.

He was a farmer for most of his life. He was a Moews Seed Corn Dealer and also an Archer Oil Salesman.

He was a member of St. Mary Church, Knights of Columbus, Farm Bureau, St. Malachy's Preservation Association, V.F.W. and American Legion. He was a volunteer coordinator for the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center and the Knights of Columbus Toostie Roll Fund Drive for Special Olympics. He was awarded the Governor's Award for volunteer service.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Gaeta of Letts, his children, Louis C. Gaeta and his wife, Priscilla, of Maryland, Vincent J. Gaeta and his wife, Janice, of Fruitland, Charles J. Gaeta and Jeanne Golien, of Muscatine, Michael Gaeta of Davenport, Joseph Gaeta and his wife, Denise, of Muscatine, Marie Collins and her husband, Ron, of Letts, Philippa Clester and her husband, Scott, of Letts, and Elizabeth Hackett and her husband, Jeff, of Muscatine; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Vincent A. Gaeta and his wife, Josephine, of Muscatine, and Phillip Gaeta Sr. of Muscatine; and one sister, Rose LoBianco and her husband, Charles, of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Carmelo and Joseph C. Gaeta, two sisters, Providence and Mary Gaeta, and three grandsons, Greg W. Collins, Kris Mann, and an infant son of Joseph and Denise Gaeta.
