Hello again Charlotte!

This is my third try at writing back a rather long message. The first two times my modem automatically disconnected before I could hit SEND. When I re-established the Internet connection, my message disappeared. VERY frustrating! This time I’ll write the message in Microsoft Word and copy/paste it into my e-mail program.

Did I understand you to say that your grandfather was the eldest child of Gustave A. Gabrielsen and Mathilda G. Olsen?[Do you know what their middle initials stand for? How did you find out that Mathilda’s middle name was Olsen?] Was Morius the middle child? Was Margaret the youngest? Were there any other siblings named Martin? What details do you know about Gustave and Mathilda regarding when they left Norway? What motivated them to leave Europe? When did they leave? What ship was it? From what port? Where did they disembark in Nova Scotia? Where did they live in Canada, and for how long? Did they arrive in MA by ship? If so, what ship? Did they enter the U.S. through Boston? Why did they come to MA? Was that their intent from the beginning? Are there any old photos of Gustave and Mathilda ? Are there any photos of Morius and his siblings? Of Morius and Annie? Where exactly are the graves of Gustave A. and Mathilda? Of Morius and Annie? Of the others? Are there any old letters or journals that would help us know them better? Things recorded in old family bibles? Do you recall any anecdotal stories at all? Do you know anything at all about the siblings or parents of Gustave A. and Mathilda G.? The smallest, seemingly unimportant details can often provide important leads. To me, genealogy is so much more than names and dates.

In any case, here’s what I can tell you. Hoping to locate Gustave A. and Mathilda, and possibly Annie Barrett, I examined the 1920 census record for Harvard, MA. What I found was a number of Gabrielsen families. You really should examine the census records yourself. I bet you’d find them very interesting.

Anyway, I located Gustav A. (age 72) and Matilda G. (age 76) [NOTE: Spelling is a bit off due to census-taker’s interpretation of what they were told] living with their daughter Margaret B.(age 36) and her husband Jamie H. Bulgor (age 47) plus grandchildren Henry M. (age 5) and Anna M. (age 2 yrs 6 mos). Both Gustave and Jamie’s occupations are listed as “farm laborer”. Although Jamie was born in MA, Jamie’s parents both came from Ireland. Gustave, Mathilde, and Margaret indicated that they had immigrated to the U.S. in 1903. While Gustave and Mathilde were still aliens in 1920, Margaret reported that she became a naturalized citizen in 1913. If you subscribe to, you can view this image on-line. It is page 5 (out of 28) of the Harvard, MA 1920 census images.

I also came upon the household of Ole G. Gabrielsen (age 40) and his wife Bessie (age 30) plus children John S. (age 5), Earle C. (age 3 yrs 8 mos), and Vera L. (11 mos). Sister-in-law Grace Davis, divorced, was also living there. Ole reported that his occupation was farm manager. Was this your grandfather? His age seems right, but he indicated that he immigrated in1899 and became a U.S. citizen in 1907(?---it was unclear). If we got very lucky, this IS your grandfather, and what he quoted was the year he left Norway or Canada to head to the U.S. What do you think??? Of course, he may be totally unrelated. See page 18 (out of 28).

The one other person I thought might be connected was on page 3. I found a Martin B. Gabrielsen (age 48), wife Alice (age 49) and children Leona M. (age 16) and Ole G. (age 15). They all came to the U.S. in 1905. What caught my interest was the fact that although Martin was from Norway, his wife and children were all born in Nova Scotia. Martin listed himself as working as public/jobber. I’m not sure what that means. Another mystery!

By the way, do you know anything at all about Annie? My father-in-law says he knew her as Grandma Barrett from Helsinki, Finland. I wish I knew more. I wonder whether she emigrated with parents and siblings. I know that there are several Erickson families in both Fitchburg and Gardner, MA according to a surname search of the 1920 census.

In answer to your question, here’s all I knew before I found your message on the bulletin board. Gustave A. Gabrielsen was born in 1848 in Norway and died in MA in 1925, while his wife Mathilda G. was born in1842 and died in 1920. They had a son named Gustave Morius Gabrielsen (b. 17 Nov 1881). He lived in Harvard, MA and eventually married Annie Karoline Erickson (b. 1881) on 18 Oct 1900. Morius died on 4 Jul 1906. My father-in-law says that it was some type of fishing accident. (Years ago, I heard reference made to a railroad accident, but that may have been someone else. Do you know anything about this???). They had one child, a daughter named Florence Christina Gabrielsen (b. 4 Aug 1906 in Harvard, MA; d. 6 Jun 1995 in Sutton, MA). [Florence loved to raise African Violets and made beautiful handmade braided rugs.] Obviously, she never knew her father. Apparently, Annie went through some tough times (My husband recalls talk of a poorhouse or workhouse) and eventually re-married someone with the surname Barrett. Florence was an only child. She married Fred Robinson Baldwin on 12 Feb 1927. They had 6 children, all of which are still living mostly in the Worcester, MA area. Their eldest child, Warren, is my father-in-law. His eldest child, Ralph, is my husband. We have 2 daughters, Clare, who is a freshman in college, and Kate, who is a high school freshman. We live in Alaska.

Apparently, your father and Florence were first cousins. My father-in-law, Warren, is your father’s first cousin once removed. My husband, Ralph, is your father’s first cousin twice removed. So, Warren is your second cousin and Ralph is your third cousin (or second cousin once removed???) Cousin relationships CONFUSE me.
