Samuel Maurice Feinberg (1895-1973)is my husband's grandfather. He was the son of George Feinberg (d. 1937 IL?) & Anne Shulman (d. IL?). He was born in Skirstemon, a small village in Lithuania, located across the Niemen River from Poland and about 3 or 4 miles from the German border toward the Baltic.

The family moved to Berlin (1898-1990) while Samuel's older brother, Alec, was being treated for TB. He died in 1900. They returned to Lithuania after his death.

Samuel had 3 younger sisters, (Mary, Bess & Marjorie- their English names) and a brother who died in infancy. Samuel's father's mother, a widow, who had survived 3 husbands lived in Poland. Samuel's mother's mother lived in Jurburg, Lithuania.

Herman had several brothers. There was Gavriel who lived in Jurburg & had a lumber business. Moshe exported firewood & building logs. A third brother, Mate, had a business quarrying sandstone & granite. Herman dealt in grain & fruit crops. George had an older cousin named Harry (Feinberg?).

Life in Lithuania was hard in the 1900's. Herman decided to go to America & seek a better life for himself & his family. Once he was settled the family was to follow. While Herman was gone the family lived with Anne's blind mother in Jurburg.

The tickets for America arrived Aug 1907. The family traveled by wagon & train to Bremen. They sailed 2 days on the Baltic & North Sea to Grimsby, England. After a weeks visit with relatives they traveled to Liverpool where their 10 day voyage to New York began. They entered America by way of Ellis Island. After clearance they boarded a train where they were eventually reunited with Herman in Watertown, WI
