There are 2 valid spellings of the Faupel/Vaupel family name. They denote the religion of the family member. The catholic branch of the family spells the name "Faupel" while those who have changed to Protestantism are supposed to spell their name "Vaupel."

The Faupel Family is descended from the Celtic (Keltern) Chatti Tribe and the origin of the family is in Fritzlar, Kreis (county) of Schwalm-Eder (formerly Fritzlar-Homberg) in the State of Hesse (Hessen) in Germnay.

When one is introduced in Fritzlar with the name of "Faupel/Vaupel" the first response is "With F or V?"

The family apparently split during the Reformation (30 years War in Germany). During this period the fighting was especially fierce in Hessen/Thuringen. Thuringen is the first state east of Hessen.

I visisted Fritzlar in 1960 and again in 2002. Since I have been Protestan for 73 years and refuse to change the spelling of my name, the family in Fritzlar is a little upset with me; however, in 1960, Heinrich Faupel, who owned a hotel in Fritzlar, showed me the family tree book (stammbaumbuch) of the Faupel Family. Also in 1960, Franz Faupel was priest of the Catholic Church in Kammerzell which is about 1 mile from Fulda and the head of the Faupel Family in Germany.

My grandfather is Justus Faupel who married Maria (Mary) Euchner and, after she died, married Mina (Minne) Elizabeth Miller. I am descended from Mina Miller by way of Herbert Clinton Faupel
