The Fambrough name has English origins. The most common spelling of the name in England was Farmbrough but there were other variations of spelling. Thomas Farmbrough migrated to Virginia Colony in the mid-seventeen hundreds and dropped the r from the name. Most of his decendants retain the spelling today. One Allen Gates Fambro, once served as Georgia State Senator, had dropped the ugh from the name, by the time of the early 1800s. During the next 100 years, a few more families had also dropped the ugh. Most of the freed slaves, who took the name, also dropped the ugh.
