John Evinger was born Oct. 23, 1815 in KY according to his tombstone and available census records. He is buried in Arkansas City, KS. The problem is who were his parents?

According to the 1820 census there were 3 Evinger families residing in Jefferson Co.,KY, George Sr, George Jr. and David Evinger. John would have been 4 years of age at the time of the census. Neither George Sr. or David list a male ages 0-9 in their households. George Jr. lists 3 males of that age range. So, John must be living in the household of George Jr.

On the 1930 census John would have been age 14. There are three Evinger families living in Jefferson Co., KY, George Jr., Jacob, and John. Only George lists a male age 10-14 residing in his household. The conclusion based on these records is that this John Evinger was the son of George Evinger Jr. and Catherine Winand.

One objection to this theory may be that the marriage record of John Evinger and Jane Yager indicates his name was John Jr. If so wasn't his father named John? I have read in several publications that the use of Jr. in a name was often used to distinguish a person from an elder relative who might be his father but was often another older relative, like an uncle, living in the same locality. This would appear to be the situation here, where John had an older uncle living in the same county who we know did not marry or have children. (See my post on John Evinger's will). So, unless additional evidence is obtained, I will show John Evinger as the son of George Evinger Jr.

I would welcome any comments or additional information.
