Although about 90 Eckler families remain in Germany, most families using the Eckler name in the US have Americanized the name from some other name. Hence, no Eckler families in Germany are known to be related to US Eckler’s–at least to the families that arrived prior to 1850.

A new book, “A Family Torn Apart by ‘Rassenschande’ (ie marriage of a German to a non-Aryan),” by Irene Eckler, Horneburg Verlag, 1998. The book appears in the lists, but I was able to obtain it direct from Irene Eckler’s mother, Irma, was from Hamburg. She was a Sepharadic Jew. Both parents were imprisoned for their crime and later died in the Holocaust. Both children were raised by foster parents. The book presents the German legal documents–especially from their Guardianship file–in chilling detail. The text appears in both German and English. No information is provided on Irene’s Eckler ancestry.

Irene is said to have come to the US, but details are lacking. She works in the publishing industry.

Anyone know anything about this family?

Another recent Eckler book is “Komm, wir gehen nach Ottilie!,” by Cecilie Eckler-von Gleich, Donat Verlag, 2000, tells the story of the Ottilie Hoffmann Hauser in Bremen, apparently a well known German organization for the treatment of alcoholism. Cecilie is a professor of history in Germany.

I have a new e-mail address:
