"Jeremiah the younger, who lived in Bedford County neighboring Franklin to the northeast) invested a portion of his inheritance, along with his brother-in-law James Callaway, in the Washington Iron Works in Rocky Mount. There they converted the existing bloomery, a relatively primitive smeltting operation, to an up-to-date furnace and forge. The enterprise advertised as far away as South Carolina, where on display, dated July 21, 1779, offered 'POTS, KETTLES, CAMP-KETTLES, OVENS, SKELLETS, FLATIRONS, SPICE MORTARS, FIRE DOGS, SMITHS ANVILS, FORGE ANVILS, FORGE HAMMERS, WAGGON BOXES, STOVES, or any other kind of castings that may be wanted". Jeremiah died soon after the advertisment appeared, and Jubal's (General Early) grandfather and namesake inherited a share, along with two brothers." The two bought their first parcel, 15 acres on Gill's Creed, from Anthony Pate in 1789 for 15 pounds. It was Jubal senior who probably built the house, in the Red Valley section about 18 miles north of Rocky Mount, where young Jubal was born on November 3, 1816. There are , for some reason, thousands of inquiries on the web sites looking for direct kinship to Jubal, why I don'tknow, there were many of the Early's in the Confederacy if they are looking for that connection.
