In searching for my DONAGHY family in NZ I have came across another family which is not connected to mine, I have quite a bit of info on this family so if anyone is interested you are welcome to email me. A brief description follows.
Michael DONAGHY arrived in Geelong, Australia in 1852. He was a determined, hard working young man, intent upon making a secure life for his wife and young family. There was strong demand for ropes from shipping using Geelong harbour, so he started Donaghys Fairview Ropeworks. By 1873 he was joined by his two sons, John and Michael. Michael arrived in NZ in 1878 to manage the Dunedin Branch. An early advertisement shows the firm as being called M. DONAGHY AND Co, LIMITED, OTAGO STEAM ROPE AND TWINE WORKS, DUNEDIN. This business is still operating today.
