Yes I was cautious of this site from looking at the samples, from which I would say that only the birth & civil marriage transcripts would be worth getting - at least at that price, which I agree is over the top, but with the scarcity of Irish records you gotta take what you can get.

I did cough up for 1 transcript though - the birth of Thomas Soden in 1879 in Sligo. This is another line of enquiry I am trying out. You see in 1900 there was an entry in the Missing People column in The Star newspaper in New Zealand from a “cousin” looking for John Winterscale Davys. I surmised that they must have been in NZ in person to place the add so looked for Davys, Winterscales or Sodens in passenger lists in the years before 1900. A Thomas Soden was the only good candidate in 1897 – & he stayed in NZ. From the NZ records I was able to work out his rough date of birth as 1879 & sure enough in the IFHF database there is this birth entry for Sligo. So I got the record & his parents names were Thomas & “Beesy” – an interesting name which I worked out from IGI birth & marriage records to be short for Brigida McGowen given that McGowens were witnesses on Thomas Soden's birth record. Anyway there is a marriage for these two in IGI & IFHF in 1862 in Roscommon – but its only a Church record so I don’t know if its any use. The reason I am tracing Thomas Soden is that if the Davys or Winterscale records are not forthcoming this may be another avenue to get back to the same families. I’ll let you know how I get on.

Regards
Robert
