died Wednesday October 20, 2010 . A lifelong resident of Erie he was born February 7, 1940, the eldest son of the late John H. and Marie Eagan Dauer. Jack was a 1957 graduate of Cathedral Prep High School. Starting as a teenager, he was employed by the family wholesale business, John H. Dauer & Sons, Inc., and later in his career went on to work for Spaulding, Inc. in Meadville, Pa. He would eventually work for GAF Materials Corporation from where he retired in 2002. He was a 20-year, award-winning veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves where he retired as Sergeant First Class. As Charter Grand Knight, Sir Knight John D. Dauer, PGK, was a founding member of the Knights of Columbus, Monsignor Robert Goodill Chapter #11229. Jack was recently honored as Grand Knight of the Year 2009-2010. He was an active member and parishioner of St. Luke Catholic Church. He also participated in the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church music program as well as volunteering at the Tuesday Pasta Kitchen of the same parish. Jack had a passion for folk and bluegrass music. He was an avid singer, guitarist, and banjo player and had his own performance group, the "We're Not Brothers" in the 1960's. He shared his musical talents throughout the rest of his years from church choirs to family picnics. Jack enjoyed fishing, traveling, golf and mostly spending time with his family and friends. Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Barbara Smith Dauer, a son John B. Dauer and his wife Cheryl of Pittsburgh; a daughter Bonnie S. Dauer of Pittsburgh; two grandchildren Race A. and Chloe D. Dauer; two step-grandsons Kyle S. and Andrew J. Dumbeck; a brother Paul Dauer and his wife Barbara of Phoenix, Ariz.; five sisters, Pattie Rodgers and her husband Denny, Ruth Quinlan, Marty Stadler, all of Erie, Sarah Berry and her husband Donald of Canton, Mich., and Kathy Hemme and her husband Todd of Astor, Fla. Many nieces and nephews also survive. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by brothers James and Timothy Dauer. Friends may call at the Russell C. Schmidt & Son Funeral Home Inc., 5000 Wattsburg Road (corner of East Gore Rd. and Pine Ave.) on Friday from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. and are invited to prayer services there on Saturday morning at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Luke Catholic Church at 10:00 a.m. Burial with military honors will be in Erie Cemetery.
