Hello Family,

I have been doing more research on the Cuffee family.

In reading a book entitled " History of Long Island: from the first settlements to present time". This book was written by Ross Powell in the year 1902. I found this book on the paid subscription.

It states that after Samson Occum the next Indian preacher, and these are excerpts from personal journals, that exerted much influence over his race was a member of the Shinnicock
tribe. His english name was Peter John.

Rev. Prime, who was a friend of Peter John's, states that Peter John was born at the Hay Ground, in the Parish of Bridgehampton in the years between 1712-1715. He ( Peter John) was comverted to christianity in the time of the "Great Awakening" which was in the years 1741-44.This is the time when most churches in this country were trying to get a foot hold in the colonies. He was it is said to have been converted by a Rev. Davenport. By what ecclesiastical authority it is not known. It is suggested he was ordained by the Separatists of Connecticut.
Peter John then took up residence in St. George's Manor where he owned property. He gathered churches in Wading River, Poosepatuck and Islip to which with that of Canoe Place. He ministered until his grandson and successor was brought into the ministry. Peter John lived to the advanced age of 88 years and died near the commencement of the new century. He is buried at Poosepatuck.

His grandson was Paul Cuffee. Paul was one of the last and in many respects the "greatest" of the native preachers. Paul was born in Brookhaven township. RI, 04 March 1747.I have the record from Ancestry and will verify it further with the state of RI. .Paul's mother was a daughter of Peter John. She is said to have been the most pious and dedicated herself to the church in Wading River. Paul, started life as a servant on the farm of of Maj. Frederick Hudson in Wading River, until he was 21 years of age.Paul was like any other person but he loved frivolity and pleasures. but, at the age of 21 he fought with the Evil One, to throw off the burden of his own sins. With a brief period of preparations he returned to his people at Wading River. He then went to Moriches, to labor with his own race for two years and then on to Poosepatuck where he was formally ordained by a delegation of ministers of the Connecticut Convention. Two years later he became a member of the " Strict Congregational Convention" on Long Island. Rev. Paul Cuffee died 07 March 1812.

My questions are: Has anyone heard this information before? Would there be any information on who Paul's mother was?
Who was the wife of Peter John and how many children did they have and there names?
Who was Paul Cuffee father?

Thanks for any help or direction
