My Grandmother Is (Concepcion) Dolores Mendoza Cuevas. Jose Enrique Cuevas is listed on my grandmother's Birth Registry dated April 7, 1888, as her grandfather. Her grandmother was shown to be Isaias Rodriguez. Although they are listed as residents of Mayaguez, I believe they lived in the Leguisamo area, which was rural and possibly grew tabacco there. Their daughter, (Maria del) Carmen aka Carmita Cuevas-Rodriguez was my grandmother's mother. She died about 1952 at about the age of 87. She had worked as a seamstress in her younger years. I knew her when I lived in Puerto Rico as a small child in the early fifties. At that point, she lived in the Barrio Balboa with her son, Pablo (Pablito) Mendoza and his wife, who were childless. He

She had been married to Carlos Mendoza Quintana who died sometime after the 1910 US Census was taken. I have heard it said that he had been a school teacher but refused to transition to English when the US administration tried to enforce it as the official language in the schools after the Spanish-American War. He was let go and ended up selling tobacco from a cart.

I am uncertain if Jose Enrique Cuevas and/or his wife were born in Spain or if the line goes further back in Puerto Rico. I have not been able to find either of their maternal surnames to help in my search for records to continue to research my Cuevas heritage. The only tangible record I have is the Birth Registry for my grandmother.

They were trades people who lived simple lives. Most of what I know is by word of mouth. I am anxious to learn more about their provenance... I would appreciate any help I could get in this effort--
