From A History of Marion County West Virginia, 1985 by the Marion County Historical Society, Inc.

The Criss family was among the early German immigrants into the Monongahela Valley.
Michael and Christina Crist or Criss settled in what is presently Fayette County, Pennsylvania. Their family included
Henry Criss, an early settler near Denver in Preston Co., WV;
Lewis Criss, who settled first in Preston County;
Moses Criss who settled in Marion County;
Mary Criss (1767-1857) married Ned Parrish;
Catherine Criss, married Michael Kerns, Jr. (1768-1833)

Henry Criss or Cress (as some descendants spell it) followed Lewis Criss to present Preston County. Lewis later moved to Marion County.
His wife's name is unknown. They raised seven children in Preston Co. and built a home near present Tunnelton in Reno District.
Their children included:
Isaac Criss married Sarah Matthew;
Susan Criss (1770-1854) married three times;
Elizabeth Criss married Jacob Cassedy, Alpheus Cozad;???
Catherine Criss married Peter Zinn;
Michael Criss (1790-1842) married Rebecca Ferguson.

Isaac Criss was a private in Daniel Stewart's company in the War of 1812.
Isaac Criss married Sarah Matthew, daughter of Joseph Matthew, a Revolutoinary War veteran.
Their children included
Rawley Criss (1817-1854) who married Sarah Dennison;
Isaac W. Criss married Sarah Thomas;
Huldah Criss married Samuel Marquess;
Pamela Criss
Rachel Taylor; There is not a coma after Rachel in this book. so I am not sure if Taylor was another son or that Rachel married a Taylor.

Isaac Criss was married twice.
His children by his second wife included
William Henry Criss who maried Lucy A. Marquess and Ida Belle McCarty;

Mary B. Criss
Isaac lived in Taylor County near Evansville.

William Henry Criss (1855- 26-Aug-1933)
married 13-May-1877 Lucy A. Marquess (1860-1880), daughter of James and Sarah Marquess.
Chiildren included:
John Walter Criss who was raised by his mother's relatives in Iowa.
William Henry Cirss's Second wife was Ida Belle McCarty (1859- 9-Dec-1931), daughter of Jacob Curtis and Caroline McCarty.
They moved from her family home at Getterman, Taylor Co., first to Thornton in Preston Co. and then to Fairmont, where they owned several lots on State Street. William Henry Criss was a teamster and hauled coal and other material. Several of his Thomas relatives were also teamsters and they settled in the same part of Fairmont.

By his second wife there were six children including
G. Clarence Criss (1883-1960) who married Ora Cordray, daughter of William Ezra and Jane Irons Cordray;
Helen Maude Criss (20-Dec-1884 - March 1956) who married Rawlins Harding Bunner (1886-1918), son of Alvinza Alexander Bunner and Lucinda Monroe Bunner; Henrietta Criss (1899-1970) who married Charles Johnson;
Harry Criss (1890-1956);
Guy Criss (1894-1928) who married Drexie Henderson;
Byrd Criss married Ernest Robinson.

Clarence Criss was a farmer and teamster in the Pleasant Valley area near Fairmont. His children were

Virginia Criss who married K.B. Bias.
Lawrence Criss founded Criss Trucking Company

Helen Maude Criss married Rawlins Harding Bunner in Marshall County, WV. He was a Church of Christ minister.
They had 5 children:
Loris Bunner (1907-1912)
Lucinda Bunner(1907-1912);
Scott Randolph Bunner(1913-1979) married Virginia Lenore Keck and resided near Fairview; Notes added by Misty---Virgina Keck Bunner was my History teacher at Clay-Battle High School, Blacksville, WV Scott and Virginia Bunner had two Children William Bunner and Virginia Bunner. Neither married but Both attened WVUniversity and are Lawyers in Morgantown,WV.
Helen Bunner married Louis Ambrose;
Rawlins Harding, Jr. married Virginia Best.
Maude Bunner lived in Cleveland from 1918 until her death.

Henrietta Criss and Charles Johnson had 8 children: Six are only listed.

The first known Criss ancestor in Marion County was Lewis Criss born ca 1750. He married Christina Clouster and settled on the border of Harrison and Marion Counties in 1780. Their children were;

Moses Criss married Charity Sharp;
Henry Criss married Phebe Ward;
Barbara Criss married John Sharp;
Catherine Criss married Michael Kern Jr. listed above as Michael Criss daugher????
Peter Criss married Salome White.

Peter and Salome (White)Criss are buried in Silmon Martin Cemetery in Marion County, Peter lived at one time in Wood County. Many of his descendents are still living in surrounding counties.
Their children were:
Anna Criss married Isaac Jones;
Elizabeth Criss married Owen Atha;
Rezin Criss married Sarah D. Vincent;
Sarah A. Criss married John Hildreth;
Ebenezor Criss married Leah Downs;
Aaron W. Criss married Elizabeth Veach.
Aaron was born in 1822, and he and his wife and oldest son, George, left Marion County in 1854 to become residents of what is now Calhoun County.
