George C. Childress was the author of the Texas Declaration of Independence. He came to Texas with his Uncle Sterling C. Robertson and two brothers James and John Childress. Robertson's father and grandfather were James and Elijah Robertson, founder of Nashville, Tenn. The Childress brothers were the son of John Childress, founder of Vanderbilt Univ. in Nashville. George's wife left him just after the writing of the Texas Declaration of Independence and he committed suicide in Galveston, Texas. His wife left Texas with the children, never to return. The only remaining Childress brothers stayed in Texas.
My grandmother was Pearl Lea Childress. My grandmother told me that I was related to George C. Childress. But it would have to been either James or John, I don't know which. Her grandfather, Elijah Collard was with the group that wrote the Texas Declaration of Independence, which I have been able to doccument, although for some reason he was not a signer of it. This would make the likelihood of the relationship to the two brothers a possibility.
