Chapel is one of those unusual names in our early history where spelling does matter. They all seem to have been literate, and were very careful to distinguish the two families, descendants of William Chapel and descendants of George Chappell. The important difference is the number of "P"s. Although both George and William appeared in New London at about the same time, more is known of George before his appearance there than of William. Descendants of both migrated to southern Berkshire County, Massachusetts, and both families also had settlers in and about Avon, in western New York. But the spelling differences remain to this day. The number "l"S on the end is insignificant as are various other slight differences.
