Thank you so much for your response. I do have Connie's book and we are fairly close cousins. In fact our common ancestor is the Blount County Thomas & Mary Cartwright. Connie descends from their youngest child, Thomas and I descend from Thomas Jrs sister, Mary 'Polly'.
I have worked and worked on her comments. She speculated Barnes because William Barnes wit. Thomas 1814 will and was a close neighbor. She thought Nelson because Thomas & Mary's 1st son was named Matthew for his father and their second son was named John Nelson - thus perhaps using her maiden name. There are a scant few Nelsons abt and I have had little success with that. I can't remember re: Henderson. There are other families that not only were their early 1800s neighbors but also followed the migration westward to Lawrence County, TN and on to NE Mississippi where they all went abt 1835. Franks, Casteel, Cagle - all these names come up as dna matches for me and I keep trying for any shred of a clue. No success! Did we have a dna match - I forgot to go back that far. Shirley.
