I recently joined Ancestry and was poking through looking for info on Carews from Newfoundland. We have documentation of the Carew line descending from a Jack (John) Carew in the early 1700's. We must be kin! My great-grandfather, Martin Carew was born in St. John's, NF about 1850. These Carews came from Devon, England and lived in Witless Bay, Newfoundland. Martin Carew was a sea captain but he developed terrible asthma and so emigrated to Milville, Massachusetts about 1890. Martin had two brothers, Laurence and Thomas. My grandmother was the youngest and the only child born in USA, in 1893. Her name was Mary Agnes Carew; she had one sister, Lillian, and two brothers George and Wilfred. My grandmother lived in Providence RI and lived to be almost 95. She was a wonderful storyteller. She often talked about her relatives in Witless Bay, Newfoundland, including a cousin Stan. She joked about some of the awful names (no offense)in the family--cousin Stan was actually Stanislaus Patrick Carew. In addition, she described visiting her cousin (Mae?) in Brooklyn in the 1920's. I wonder if this branch is the root of all the New Jersey Carews. Unfortunately, the record of the Carew line gives only the names of the eldest sons and their sons. No wives or daughters are mentioned, so I know nothing about the female ancestors. There are no more Carew descendents of Martin Carew. The last Carew, George Carew, son of my grandmother's brother George, died many years ago and had no sons. However, the Carew name has been continued as the middle name of many of Martin's grandchildren and great-grandchildren, down to the current generation of great-great-grandchildren. I would love to visit Newfoundland and learn more about the Carews of Witless Bay. My grandmother, who herself was very intelligent and well-read, was very proud of her Carew ancestry. They were well-educated and very independent. I would like to add another chapter to my grandmother's stories. Please respond.
