Dear Sally,
Thanks for your kind offer. We have found that my gggrandfather, John Capes, b. abt 1804 was born in England. I have no clue how to start looking over there.
I have found a record of a John Capes who bought land in Ohio in 183l, so it could be the same one. Ohio at that time was being parcelled out to solders/veterans, but many of them were selling their rights to others. Our John (1804) was too young for any of the wars, but perhaps his father or uncles, etc. fought. And yet, he and his parents were definitely born in England according to the census records.
There is also a record of a Capt.John Capes in the Philadelphia,Pennsylvania area during the Revolutionary War. Just one mention of him, though, and no details.
John Capes(1804) married Stacy Ann Snee, on 23 Dec. 1851 in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Their children were Mary R., Solon, Charles William, Emma, George, John F.(my ggrandfather) and Albert L. I mention them only because the Capes' families seem to use and reuse the same names over many generations and it might be a clue as to which line we belong to.
John F.Capes (1863-1961) married Alice Adavia Pearch. Their children were: Edna A., Verna G.,Lester D.(my grandfather), Glenn C., and Wayne. Lester's children were George Lester, and Ruth Isabella. My generatinon has a Robert, a John and a Ruth.
It's pretty skimpy information on which to follow someone across an ocean, but I'll appreciate anything you can do. If you need anything this side of the 'pond,' please ask. Thanks again. Ruth Capes Little
